About the Metre Convention
A foundation for global measurement standards
The Metre Convention, signed on 20 May 1875, established an enduring framework for international collaboration in metrology, the science of measurement. This pivotal agreement laid the groundwork for the global uniformity of measurements, which remains essential for scientific research, industrial innovation and international trade. By creating the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) the Metre Convention united nations under a shared vision: to develop and maintain a universal measurement system that supports progress and equity across the world.
