Overview
The BIPM and the Italian Physical Society collaborate to organize a Metrology Summer School at the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi in Varenna, Italy. The Varenna Metrology School consists of modules on physical and chemical metrology, as well as fundamental issues common to all areas of metrology.
The programme of the Varenna Metrology School is designed with consideration of the current challenges and opportunities in measurement science. It also provides numerous opportunities for the young metrologists and lecturers to network informally at events outside the lectures, allowing them to form useful contacts for the future.
The recent program was jointly organized with INRIM in 2019, and this was the seventh summer school in metrology held since 1976. A total of 81 applications were received from 25 different countries, and 56 students and observers were selected to participate.
In 2019, METAS provided sponsorship for selected participants to attend the Metrology School and then undertake a short (two- to six-week) placement at METAS, to pursue a specific metrology topic of interest. The sponsorship was aimed at young metrologists from NMIs/DIs of Member States or Associates with emerging metrology systems who demonstrated strong scientific ability and the potential to become future leaders in the field.
The BIPM will continue to run the Varenna Metrology School initiative. Announcements for the metrology school will be made as it becomes available. In addition, any organizations interested in sponsoring the participation of young metrologists are encouraged to contact the BIPM CKBT office.
