Webinar - Accelerator Neutron Source

Hiroki Tanaka ( Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science, Kyoto University)

Development of accelerator neutron sources for boron neutron capture therapy is progressing, and systems combining cyclotrons, electrostatic accelerators, and linacs with beryllium or lithium have been realized. A system combining a cyclotron and beryllium has been approved as a medical device in Japan in March 2020 after undergoing clinical trials.

The gold activation method and the method using an ionization chamber, which has been used in research reactors to date, are being used for dose evaluation. Recently, the development of a neutron real-time detector is progressing to replace the gold activation method, and its application to clinical practice is also being considered. In this webinar, the current status of accelerator neutron sources and dose evaluation will be introduced. In addition, information will be shared on the issue of ensuring traceability to national standards for dose evaluation.

This webinar will be chaired by Tetsuro Matsumoto (NMIJ).
