CCRI Webinar on "Radionuclide Reference Materials"

The IAEA produces and provides reference materials (RMs) to laboratories world-wide to assist them in the quality assurance of the results they obtain by nuclear analytical techniques. The IAEA is the world's largest supplier of matrix reference materials characterised for radionuclides. RMs are units of a homogeneous material well characterised for a specific analyte. According to ISO 17034:2016(E) RMs are used in all stages of the measurement process, including for method validation, calibration and quality control. They also could be used in interlaboratory comparisons for assessing laboratory proficiency.

The quality of the reference material used in the analytical laboratory directly reflects on the quality (reliability) of the results obtained for the needs of R&D and technological disciplines. Certified RMs must meet high requirements regarding homogeneity and stability, as well as the uncertainty and traceability of certified values. Requirements of ISO 17034:2016(E) and ISO/FDIS 33405:2024 will be elaborated.

This webinar will highlight the importance of RMs and the challenges related to their production, with emphasis to their traceability to radioactive standards.
