IAEA

Liaison: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

Formal relationship

BIPM-IAEA MoU

  • IAEA participates in the CIPM MRA.

Links between the BIPM and the IAEA

  • IAEA dosimetry standards are traceable to the BIPM.
  • The IAEA participates in all Sections of the CCRI, and in the CCQM.
  • The IAEA participates in RMO comparisons in dosimetry, and pilots some CCRI(II) comparisons, e.g. for activity measurements in environmental samples.
  • Dr David T. Burns (BIPM Ionizing Radiation Department) is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Network of Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (IAEA/WHO SSDL Network).

Purpose

The IAEA works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies. The IAEA operates the IAEA/WHO SSDL system for traceable dosimetry in its Member States. Further information about the SSDL network is available at https://ssdl.iaea.org/. It also produces a number of certified reference materials for chemical measurement (notably stable isotopes and heavy metals).

The BIPM and the IAEA share objectives to support the safe and effective use of ionizing radiation. The BIPM provides metrological traceability in ionizing radiation at the highest level for many of its Member States and Associates. The IAEA has established IAEA/WHO SSDL Network which was set up to improve the accuracy in radiation dosimetry for IAEA Member States, and the network is linked to the work of the BIPM through metrological traceability to primary standards laboratories and primary standards held at the BIPM.
