Liaison: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Links between the BIPM and the IPCC
- The BIPM is an observer organization to the IPCC (admitted by the Sixty-first Session of the IPCC in 2024).
- The BIPM participates in sessions of the IPCC and the plenary sessions of the IPCC Working Groups.
Purpose
The IPCC is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.
The IPCC provides regular assessments of the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation.
Created in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the objective of the IPCC is to provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies.
As an Observer the BIPM is able to attend sessions of the IPCC and the plenary sessions of the IPCC Working Groups and make interventions and remarks on subjects of common interest to the IPCC and the BIPM. Subjects of common interest include the accuracy and traceability of measurements for Earth Observations and climate studies as well as measurements related to greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals from the atmosphere. The IPCC encourages experts from Observer Organizations to review draft IPCC reports.
