BIPM technical services: Gas Metrology
The BIPM Chemistry Department coordinates comparisons of National Metrology Institutes’ (NMIs) gas standard capabilities required for establishing globally uniform measurement systems for atmospheric and environmentally important gases, following the CCQM, CCQM Working Group on Gas Analysis (GAWG) and CCQM Working Group on Isotope ratios (IRWG) strategies in support of national energy and environmental priorities. In particular, the Department provides and coordinates comparisons of national measurement standards for:
- greenhouse gases, demonstrating consistency at levels required to support national energy and environmental priorities;
- major air-quality gases, demonstrating consistency at levels required to support national health and environmental priorities.
The Department also runs knowledge transfer programmes for NMIs on the utilization of FTIR and dynamic methods for reactive gas standard characterization for underpinning air quality measurements.
