Technician: Analytical Chemistry

 

The BIPM seeks a Technician-Analytical Chemistry for the following appointment:

  • Grade: B7
  • Contract: Full-time 5 year fixed-term contract (with possibility of conversion to an indefinite appointment)

  • Location: Sèvres (a suburb of Paris) - France

 

The Chemistry Department of the BIPM operates laboratories organizing international comparisons of peptide/protein and small organic primary reference materials and calibrators as well as capacity building and knowledge transfer programmes and seeks a technician to join its team.

The postholder will report to the Director of the Chemistry Department.

Principal duties and responsibilities

The principal duties and responsibilities of the postholder will be to:

  • Develop and validate LC-UV and LC-CAD methods for organic small molecule and peptide pure material and calibration solution characterization under supervision of project leads;
  • Perform LC-MS and LC-hr-MS methods following established procedures;
  • Perform Karl Fischer Titration (KFT), Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS), GC-MS and weighing procedures following ISO 17025 compliant procedures;
  • Undertake homogeneity and stability testing of organic pure materials and solution following established procedures;
  • Train and support visiting scientists to autonomously operate instrumentation;
  • Draft internal reports of laboratory work and present outputs at group meetings;
  • Provide support for colleagues in research and development activities;
  • Organize and perform purchases, equipment maintenance and chemical storage, manual handling and transportation, and waste management;
  • Ensure the laboratory remains clean, organized, and compliant with safety and quality standards by applying good laboratory practices (GLP).

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic background

  • At a minimum a technical diploma in analytical chemistry (2/3 years of professional education) at the level of BUT/DUT/BTS or equivalent.

Professional background

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience within an analytical laboratory;
  • Practical experience in organic analytical chemistry and operating liquid chromatographic techniques;
  • Experience in analytical method development and validation and implementing analytical methods in compliance with ISO 17025;
  • Previous experience in the operation of current generation hybrid LC-MS/MS (QTRAP, Sciex), LC-UV-CAD (Vanquish, Thermo), LC-hr-MS (Orbitrap), LC-DAD (1200 series, Agilent) and ion chromatography (IC930, Metrohm) instruments and associated data analysis software would be an advantage;
  • Experience in the operation of one or more of KFT, DVS, and GC-MS systems.

Terms of Employment & Benefits

  • Full-time 5 year fixed-term contract, with an initial probationary period of 6 months, renewable once.
  • Competitive gross annual salary starting from 47 144 euros, plus allowances subject to eligibility, including compensation for an expatriate status.
  • Salaries and allowances exempt from income tax in France (French nationals and permanent residents in France subject to “taux effectif” of the French tax system).
  • 30 days paid holiday per year.
