The evolution of voltage metrology to the latest generation of Josephson voltage standards

Speakers

  • Alain Rüfenacht (NIST)
  • Stéphane Solve (BIPM)

Abstract

We celebrated last year the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the Josephson effect. Brian Josephson was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973 for his discovery. The Josephson effect provides a perfect frequency to voltage conversion, linking the microscopic quantum properties of a tunnel junction between two superconductors to macroscopic physical quantities. It has been applied for the generation of quantum voltage references for decades. On May 20, 2019, following the redefinition of the SI units, the Josephson effect has become the primary method for the realization of the volt.

In the first presentation, given by Dr. Alain Rüfenacht (NIST), after introducing the evolution of voltage metrology, the latest generation of Josephson voltage standards disseminated and their various metrological applications will be reviewed.
In the second presentation, given by Dr. Stéphane Solve (BIPM) the focus will be on the technical aspects and practical metrological challenges of realizing the dc volt in a laboratory using Josephson voltage standards.
