BIPM technical services: Mass Metrology
The principal role of the Physical Metrology Department is to promote world-wide compatibility in mass measurements by providing calibrations traceable to the kilogram. The Department also organizes key comparisons to determine the level of agreement between kilogram realizations from different NMIs and to provide information for the calculation of the CCM ‘consensus value’. The latter will be the basis for the internationally coordinated dissemination of the kilogram until the dispersion in values becomes compatible with the individual realization uncertainties. Research and development are carried out in several areas in order to improve our services and understanding of the fundamental problems of mass determinations at the kilogram level.
